Mothballs and the Olin's Multi-Cultural Star

I found this ugly vest (above) in a box in the attic along with my winter clothes. Pulling them out of the moth balls I realized that non of these things will be going with me down south as winter is non-existent when one is living 5 degrees north of the equator.

Nevertheless, it has been in the high 40s/low 50s all day today and the sun has been out. It is a crisp, clear, and absolutely wonderful Sunday in the southland and I spent the day with my parents putting up holiday decorations, lights, tree, etc.

One of the staple Olin home decorative practices is the assembly and mounting of a giant star at the top of our roof line. (pictured left in it's final state)

This star has been a part of our holiday decor for as long as I can remember. The star was designed and built by, who other than, my handyman-of-a-father. It is in it's second version (bigger and painted white instead of brown) and was the bane of my holiday decorating experience when I was a teenager. This year, however, marks an important point in the annual cultivation of holiday spirit and family unity, because I do not know if I will be around the following year during this time. Putting up the star has become one of my favorite activities to do with my father, and I have never missed a year doing it.

My dad and I decided to make the star multi-colored this year. Not only is it tacky, I think it reflects the Olin's appreciation for multiculturalism. Yay for America and yay for tackiness.
